When someone has scoliosis, their spine curves to the side, making a "S" or "C" shape. Idiopathic scoliosis can happen in childhood, but it can also be caused by neurological or muscular conditions, birth defects, or spinal injuries. If the curve is mild, you may not need treatment. But if the curve is moderate to severe, it can hurt, make it hard to stand up straight, and make it hard to breathe over time.
A hunchback, a swayback, or flat back syndrome are all examples of spinal deformities, which are abnormal curves or misalignments of the spine. In the worst cases, these conditions can make it hard to walk, balance, or even breathe or heart.
Treatment is recommended when scoliosis or deformity:
· Progresses or worsens with time
· Causes pain, difficulty standing or walking
· Affects lung or heart function
· Impacts a person’s quality of life or self-confidence
For kids and teens, finding the problem early is very important to stop the curve from getting worse. Changes that get worse over time and pain in adults often mean that something needs to be fixed.
When braces or other non-surgical treatments don't work, spine surgery may be suggested to fix the curve, relieve nerve pressure, and make the spine more stable. Rods, screws, and spinal fusion techniques are used in the surgery to straighten and support the spine in a better position.
Neuromonitoring, navigation systems, and minimally invasive approaches are some of the new technologies that have made scoliosis correction safer and more accurate.
Patients usually stay in the hospital for a few days, then go to physical therapy and slowly start doing normal things again. Most people see a big difference in their posture, their pain goes away, and their quality of life improves.
