Ovarian cystectomy, also known as ovarian cyst removal, is a surgery that takes out cysts, which are fluid-filled sacs or growths, from one or both ovaries. Most ovarian cysts are not dangerous and go away on their own, but others can get big, hurt, or create problems like bloating, irregular periods, or trouble getting pregnant. If cysts don't go away on their own or with medicine, or if there's a chance they could burst or twist, surgery is generally the best option.
Women who have persistent lower abdomen pain, bloating, pain during sex, irregular periods, or cysts shown on an ultrasound may need to have their cysts removed. If the cyst is huge, developing, or thought to be malignant, the procedure is also recommended. This technique may also help women who are getting fertility treatment or who keep getting cysts. Your gynecologist will do imaging tests and blood work to figure out what kind of cyst you have and what the best way to treat it is.
Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery is the most common way to remove ovarian cysts. It is a minimally invasive approach that only requires a few minor cuts in the abdomen. A small camera and surgical equipment are put into these cuts to properly remove the cyst without harming any good ovarian tissue. In some circumstances, especially if the cyst is big or looks worrisome, open surgery (laparotomy) may be needed. The treatment is done while the patient is asleep and normally lasts one to two hours.
Most women can go home the same day or within 24 hours after laparoscopic cyst ectomy. Recovery is usually swift. You might feel a little uncomfortable, have some spotting, or feel bloated for a few days, but these symptoms normally go away quickly with rest and medication. Most patients are able to go back to their normal activities within a week. In most situations, ovarian function stays the same and fertility stays the same. Regular checkups make sure that the healing process is going well and that any cysts that come back in the future may be found.
Our trained gynecologists use the most up-to-date minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and surgically treat ovarian cysts. Our main goals are to protect reproductive health, ease pain, and make sure the recovery goes smoothly and safely. We give caring, individualized support from the first consultation until after the surgery to help you get back to excellent health and peace of mind.
